Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: clevidipine (Cleviprex) is a fast-acting blood pressure medicine that's given through an IV in the hospital, usually when someone's pressure needs careful, close control. Some studies suggest that regularly drinking fermented milk can nudge the top number (systolic) of your blood pressure down a little. So in theory, the two together could lower blood pressure a bit more than expected.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on how things work, not something clearly seen in patients. The blood pressure effect from fermented milk is mild, and clevidipine is carefully dosed and monitored by your medical team while you're on it. A normal serving of yogurt or kefir is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you have questions, just check with your doctor or pharmacist.

“When you are on clevidipine (Cleviprex), a hospital IV drip used to bring dangerously high blood pressure down fast, every one of the 119 supplements and herbs listed here pushes on the very thing the drug controls, and that earns this list real caution. Most of the 104 moderate entries, everyday products like fish oil among them, add…”
