Fermented Milk and Clinafloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Clinafloxacin

Clinafloxacin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Milk interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of fermented milk.
Some fermented milk preparations contain live and active organisms, including lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains. Simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of these organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and fermented milk preparations by at least 2 hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pair: it's not that the fermented milk changes how Clinafloxacin works in your body, it's the other way around. Clinafloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and antibiotics don't pick and choose. They can knock out the helpful live cultures (like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) in fermented milk right along with the bacteria you're trying to treat. So you may simply get less of the gut benefit you were hoping for from that yogurt or kefir.

This concern is theoretical, based on how these two work, so it's nothing to panic over. An easy fix is to space them out by at least 2 hours. If you take Clinafloxacin regularly, just ask your pharmacist how to time things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page

“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”
