Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
Animal and in vitro research suggests that fo-ti may inhibit CYP2C19. An in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP2C19 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to break down diazepam (Valium). Lab and animal studies hint that Fo-ti may slow that enzyme down. If it does, diazepam could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which would lean toward stronger effects, things like extra drowsiness, dizziness, foggy thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only theoretical, based on test-tube and animal work, and it has not been seen in real people. Interestingly, raw Fo-ti seemed to block the enzyme more than heavily processed extracts. Fo-ti also carries its own liver-injury reports, so before you combine these, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, fo-ti might increase or decrease the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP1A2. Additionally, in vitro research suggests that the degree of CYP1A2 inhibition depends on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, in an animal study, an aqueous extract of fo-ti inhibited CYP1A2 while an alcoholic extract of fo-ti induced CYP1A2. Induction or inhibition of CYP1A2 by fo-ti has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest picture with Fo-ti and diazepam (Valium). The concern on file is that Fo-ti may affect a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which can play a part in clearing certain medications. If Fo-ti slowed that enzyme down, diazepam could build up a bit, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, foggy thinking, or unsteadiness on your feet. Diazepam is not a prodrug, so it doesn't need that enzyme to start working.

That said, this is based only on lab and animal studies, and the results were mixed (some forms blocked the enzyme, others sped it up). Nothing like this has been confirmed in people, and CYP1A2 is only a minor player for diazepam. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since Fo-ti has been tied to liver issues.

Here's the gist for Valium (diazepam). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break diazepam down. In test-tube studies, Fo-ti has shown it might slow that same enzyme. If that were to happen in people, diazepam could clear out a little more slowly and build up, which can mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I'd put a soft asterisk on this, though. The concern comes only from lab research, and animal studies didn't show the same effect. It has never actually been reported in a real person. So this is more theoretical than proven. Still, since Fo-ti has its own liver-injury reports, it's worth running past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
