Fulvic Acid and Cyclosporine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Cyclosporine

Cyclosporine falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Fulvic Acid interacts with.

Theoretically, taking fulvic acid might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
Animal research shows that fulvic acid stimulates immune function.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with cyclosporine: its whole job is to calm down your immune system so your body doesn't attack a transplanted organ, or so an overactive immune condition like psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis settles down. Fulvic acid, on the other hand, has shown in animal and lab studies that it may stimulate immune activity. So the worry is that these two pull in opposite directions, and the fulvic acid could blunt how well cyclosporine works.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical. We don't have solid human studies proving it happens. But because cyclosporine is a high-stakes drug where even small drops in protection can risk transplant rejection or a flare, I'd play it safe. Please check with your transplant team or pharmacist before adding fulvic acid.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.

  • Immune support

Fulvic acid is a natural compound formed when plants and microbes break down in soil, and it is sold as a supplement for energy, gut, and overall wellness. About Cyclosporine

What Is Cyclosporine Used For?

Brand names: Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune, Ciclosporine, Cequa, Verkazia, Vevye

Oral cyclosporine (such as Gengraf, Neoral and the modified generic capsules and solution) is used to prevent organ rejection in kidney, liver and heart transplants. It is also used for severe active rheumatoid arthritis that has not responded well enough to methotrexate. It is also used for severe, hard-to-treat plaque psoriasis in adults with normal immune systems.

Sandimmune capsules and injection, used with corticosteroids, prevent organ rejection and treat chronic rejection in people previously treated with other immune-suppressing medicines. Eye products have different uses. Restasis, Restasis MultiDose and generic cyclosporine eye emulsion increase tear production in dry eye linked to eye inflammation. Cequa increases tear production in keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye). Vevye treats signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. Verkazia treats vernal keratoconjunctivitis in children and adults.
