Gamboge has stimulant laxative effects. In some people gamboge can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can increase the effects of warfarin, increase international normalized ratio (INR), and increase the risk of bleeding. Advise patients who take warfarin not to take excessive amounts of gamboge.

Here's the gist with gamboge and your warfarin. Gamboge is a harsh stimulant laxative, and one of its main effects is loose stools or outright diarrhea. When you have ongoing diarrhea, it can shift how your body handles warfarin and bump up your INR, which is the number we watch to make sure your blood isn't too thin. A higher INR means a higher chance of bruising, nosebleeds, blood in the urine or stool, or bleeding that's slow to stop.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how warfarin behaves, not solid proof. But warfarin has very little wiggle room, so even small changes matter. I'd honestly steer clear of gamboge altogether (it can be toxic), and check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding anything new.

What is Gamboge?

Gamboge is a bright yellow tree resin used historically as a strong laxative and as an artists' pigment, but it is toxic in even modest amounts and is not a safe dietary supplement. Modern interest centers on its compound gambogic acid in laboratory cancer research, which does not make the raw resin safe to take. We recommend avoiding oral use of gamboge.

About Warfarin

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
