Here's a twist worth pointing out. The interaction on file talks about gamboge worsening potassium loss from water pills, but spironolactone is a bit different. It's a potassium-sparing diuretic, meaning it actually helps your body hold onto potassium rather than dump it. So the usual concern about low potassium doesn't line up neatly with this particular drug.

That said, gamboge is a harsh gut irritant that can cause real diarrhea, and heavy fluid and mineral loss from that can throw your levels off in unpredictable ways. Honestly, my bigger worry is that gamboge itself isn't safe to swallow. I'd steer clear of it entirely and talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding anything new alongside spironolactone.

What is Gamboge?

Gamboge is a bright yellow tree resin used historically as a strong laxative and as an artists' pigment, but it is toxic in even modest amounts and is not a safe dietary supplement. Modern interest centers on its compound gambogic acid in laboratory cancer research, which does not make the raw resin safe to take. We recommend avoiding oral use of gamboge.

About Spironolactone

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
