Chlorthalidone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Gamboge interacts with.

Overuse of gamboge might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking gamboge along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia. Initiation of potassium supplementation or an increase in potassium supplement dose may be necessary for some patients.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Chlorthalidone is a thiazide-type water pill, and one of its known downsides is that it can push potassium out of your body through your urine. Gamboge is a harsh laxative that irritates the gut and can also cause fluid and potassium losses through your stool. Stack those two together and you could drop your potassium lower than either would alone.

Low potassium (hypokalemia) can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical worry based on how these substances behave, not strong clinical proof. That said, we really don't recommend taking gamboge at all since it's toxic even in small amounts. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with chlorthalidone.

What is Gamboge?

Gamboge is a bright yellow tree resin used historically as a strong laxative and as an artists' pigment, but it is toxic in even modest amounts and is not a safe dietary supplement. Modern interest centers on its compound gambogic acid in laboratory cancer research, which does not make the raw resin safe to take. We recommend avoiding oral use of gamboge.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
