Here's the simple version. Gamboge works as a harsh laxative, and like other strong laxatives it can flush potassium out of your body over time. Prednisolone, a steroid, already tends to lower potassium on its own. Stack the two together and the worry is that your potassium could drop lower than it should. That can leave you feeling weak, tired, or crampy, and in bigger swings it can affect your heart rhythm.

I'll be honest: this concern is theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than solid studies. But here's the bigger point. Gamboge is genuinely toxic even in small doses, so I wouldn't recommend taking it at all. If you're on prednisolone, please run any laxative or supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What is Gamboge?

Gamboge is a bright yellow tree resin used historically as a strong laxative and as an artists' pigment, but it is toxic in even modest amounts and is not a safe dietary supplement. Modern interest centers on its compound gambogic acid in laboratory cancer research, which does not make the raw resin safe to take. We recommend avoiding oral use of gamboge.

Prednisolone is prescribed for many different conditions where inflammation or an overactive immune system is causing harm. These range from severe allergic reactions and asthma to certain skin diseases, blood disorders, eye problems, and some cancers.

It is also used to support the body when the adrenal glands aren't making enough of their own steroids, and to manage flares of conditions like ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, and nephrotic syndrome (a kidney condition causing protein loss in the urine).
