Here's the gist with these two together. Gamboge works as a harsh laxative that flushes water and minerals through your gut, and over time that can drag your potassium levels down. Hydrocortisone can also lower potassium on its own, especially at higher doses or with longer use. Put them side by side and those effects could stack up, leaving you low on potassium. That can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat.

I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how each acts, not something proven in studies. That said, I'd steer clear of gamboge anyway since it's genuinely toxic by mouth. If you ever feel unusually weak or crampy on hydrocortisone, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What is Gamboge?

Gamboge is a bright yellow tree resin used historically as a strong laxative and as an artists' pigment, but it is toxic in even modest amounts and is not a safe dietary supplement. Modern interest centers on its compound gambogic acid in laboratory cancer research, which does not make the raw resin safe to take. We recommend avoiding oral use of gamboge.

What Is Hydrocortisone Used For?

Brand names: Cortef, Hydrocortone, Carmol HC cream, Hydrocortisone Iodoquinol Cream, Vytone Cream, Massengil Medicated Towelettes, Dioderm, Efcortelan Cream, Mildison, Alphaderm, Calmurid HC, Efcortelan Ointment, Texacort, Alkindi Sprinkle

Hydrocortisone is used to calm skin inflammation and relieve itching caused by conditions that respond to corticosteroid treatment. In adults, it treats a broad range of inflammatory skin conditions. In children as young as 3 months old, it is specifically approved for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema).

It is also used in rectal foam form to treat inflammation of the lower bowel, such as ulcerative proctitis.
