ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Bivalirudin
Bivalirudin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Garden Cress interacts with.
Animal research suggests that garden cress seed extract can increase bleeding time when used in combination with the antiplatelet agent clopidogrel. This has not been shown in humans and it is unclear if garden cress seed itself has anticoagulant or antiplatelet effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing about bivalirudin: it's a powerful blood thinner given through an IV, almost always in a hospital setting during procedures like angioplasty. Because trained staff are watching you closely and adjusting the dose, a leafy herb like garden cress isn't going to throw things off the way it might with a pill you take at home.
The concern on file is purely theoretical. In animal studies, concentrated garden cress seed extract slightly increased bleeding time alongside another blood thinner. That has never been shown in people, and it's not even clear garden cress thins blood on its own. Food amounts are very unlikely to matter. Still, if you take concentrated cress seed supplements, mention it to your care team so they're aware.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bivalirudin page
“Bivalirudin (Angiomax) is a strong intravenous blood thinner used during heart procedures like angioplasty, and because bleeding is already its main built-in danger, this list deserves genuine care. All 202 supplements on it interact the same basic way: they thin the blood or blunt platelets themselves, stacking bleeding risk on top of…”

About Garden Cress
What is Garden Cress?
- Digestive support
- Bone health
- Iron and vitamin source
- Cough and respiratory comfort
- Boosting breast milk (traditional)
- Constipation relief
Garden cress is a nutritious leafy herb and seed used widely in cooking and traditional medicine, providing vitamins, minerals, and fiber. While it has a long history of use for digestion, bone health, and lactation, strong human research supporting most medicinal claims is limited. It is generally safe as a food, but concentrated seed supplements should be used cautiously and avoided in pregnancy.
