Garden Cress and Insulin Lispro

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Lispro

Insulin Lispro falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Garden Cress interacts with.

Theoretically, taking garden cress with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Evidence from animal research suggests that an extract of garden cress can reduce blood glucose levels. This has not been shown in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: garden cress may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. If you stack that on top of your Insulin Lispro (Admelog), which already pushes your blood sugar down quickly after meals, the two together could in theory drop it too far. That's hypoglycemia, and it can show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling faint.

I want to be honest about how strong this is, though. The only evidence comes from animal studies, not people, so it's mostly theoretical. Normal culinary amounts of garden cress in your food are very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated seed supplements are the bigger question mark. If you want to try them, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin Lispro page

“Blood sugar is the entire subject of this list. Insulin lispro (Admelog) is a rapid mealtime insulin dosed to bring glucose down after eating, and the supplements below can shove that same number around, most of them downward, which risks a genuine low.”

  • Constipation relief

Garden cress is a nutritious leafy herb and seed used widely in cooking and traditional medicine, providing vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
