Betamethasone falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Ginkgo interacts with.

Theoretically, taking ginkgo with P-glycoprotein substrates might increase the levels and adverse effects of these substrates.
A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that using ginkgo leaf extract 120 mg orally three times daily for 14 days can increase levels of the P-glycoprotein substrate, talinolol, by 36% in healthy male individuals. However, single doses of ginkgo do not have the same effect.

Here's the practical picture for ginkgo and betamethasone. Betamethasone is moved around the body in part by a transporter called P-glycoprotein, and ginkgo may slow that transporter down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more betamethasone build up, leading to slightly stronger effects. The evidence here is limited, mostly from a small study using a different drug (talinolol), and a single dose of ginkgo didn't cause the effect.

The good news is that the betamethasone you're asking about is a topical cream or ointment for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Very little is absorbed into the body, so this interaction is unlikely to matter much for skin use. Still, if you're using it over large areas or for a long time, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Betamethasone Topical Used For?

Brand names: Celestone, Diprolene AF, Diprosone

Betamethasone topical is used to relieve the redness, swelling, and itching of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses (skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment). Sernivo Spray is specifically approved for plaque psoriasis of the body. Diprolene (topical cream, ointment, or gel) is indicated for inflammatory and itchy skin conditions in patients 13 years of age and older.

This medication is for use on the skin only. It is not approved for use on the face, groin, or underarms, and it is not for use in the eyes, mouth, or vagina.
