Deferasirox falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Golden Ragwort interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inducers might increase the risk of adverse effects from the pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) constituents in golden ragwort.
Golden ragwort contains PAs. PAs are substrates of CYP3A4. Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites.

Here's the thing to know with this pairing. Golden Ragwort contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which your liver can turn into harmful, reactive byproducts. Deferasirox happens to nudge up the activity of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and that's the same enzyme that converts those plant compounds into their toxic form. So in theory, taking the two together could speed up that conversion and raise the strain on your liver.

I'll be straight with you, this concern is theoretical and comes from lab and animal work, not human studies. But Golden Ragwort already carries real liver-damage risk on its own, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. If you're on Deferasirox and considering any herbal product, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Deferasirox

What Is Deferasirox Used For?

Brand names: Exjade, Jadenu

Deferasirox — available as tablets (including Exjade and Jadenu) and oral powder granules (including Jadenu) — is used to treat chronic iron overload in patients 2 years and older whose bodies have accumulated too much iron from repeated blood transfusions.

It is also used to treat chronic iron overload in patients 10 years and older who have non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) syndromes — a group of inherited blood disorders — when liver iron levels and blood ferritin levels meet specific thresholds. The safety and effectiveness of deferasirox when combined with other iron-chelation therapies have not been established.
