Rifabutin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Golden Ragwort interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inducers might increase the risk of adverse effects from the pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) constituents in golden ragwort.
Golden ragwort contains PAs. PAs are substrates of CYP3A4. Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites.

Here's the thing with this pairing: Golden Ragwort contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break them down into substances that can actually be more toxic, not less. Rifabutin happens to be a strong revver of that very enzyme. So the worry is that Rifabutin could speed up how fast your liver turns those plant chemicals into harmful byproducts, raising the odds of liver and blood vessel damage.

I want to be honest, though, this concern comes only from lab and animal data, so it's theoretical. The bigger point is that Golden Ragwort really isn't safe to take internally at all, with or without Rifabutin. Please don't change anything on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Rifabutin Used For?

Brand name: Mycobutin

Rifabutin capsules are used to prevent disseminated MAC disease — a serious bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium avium complex — in patients with advanced HIV infection.

It is not approved to treat active tuberculosis, and it should not be used alone against active TB. It is also not proven to prevent M. tuberculosis infections.
