Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Rufinamide
Rufinamide falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Gotu Kola interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that gotu kola may have sedative effects via binding of GABA receptors.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: Rufinamide (Banzel) already works by calming down extra electrical activity in the brain, so drowsiness and dizziness are pretty common with it. Gotu kola may have its own mild calming effect, possibly by nudging the same GABA system in the brain. Put them together and the theory is that the sleepy, foggy, or unsteady feelings from your rufinamide could be a bit stronger.
I want to be honest about how solid this is, though. This warning comes only from lab and pharmacology reasoning, not from real patient studies, so it's more of a 'be aware' than a 'this will definitely happen.' Please don't change anything on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding gotu kola, and watch for extra tiredness, trouble concentrating, or wobbliness if you do.
