HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Tamoxifen Citrate

Tamoxifen Citrate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Gotu Kola interacts with.

Theoretically, taking gotu kola with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects.
There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this isn't about gotu kola changing how tamoxifen works or how your body activates it. Instead, the concern is that both can be hard on the liver. Tamoxifen occasionally raises liver enzymes or, rarely, causes more serious liver issues, and there are a handful of case reports linking gotu kola to liver trouble too. Stack them together and, in theory, the strain on your liver could add up.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. It's anecdotal and theoretical, just a few reports, so this is more a caution than a red flag. Since tamoxifen is an important medication you'll likely take for years, please run the gotu kola past your oncologist or pharmacist first, and watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or unusual fatigue.

Gotu kola is a traditional Ayurvedic and Asian herb that people use for wound healing, circulation, skin problems, and as a calming or memory-supporting herb. About Tamoxifen

What Is Tamoxifen Used For?

Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox

Tamoxifen is used to treat metastatic breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread) in both women and men, and as adjuvant (after-surgery) therapy for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.

In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) — a very early, non-invasive form of breast cancer — tamoxifen is used after breast surgery and radiation to reduce the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Soltamox (oral solution) is specifically indicated for all of these uses in adult patients.
