Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Rifampin
Rifampin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Guar Gum interacts with.
Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you take it at the same time as rifampin, that gel can trap some of the medicine in your gut and slow or lower how much actually gets absorbed into your body. With rifampin, getting the full dose into your bloodstream really matters, because it's treating a serious infection like TB. If less drug is absorbed, the treatment could work less well, and with TB that can even contribute to resistance over time.
This is based on modest human evidence with similar oral drugs (such as metformin and penicillin), not specifically rifampin, so it's a reasonable concern rather than a certainty. A practical fix many use is spacing them out: take your rifampin first, then wait before the guar gum. Please run the timing past your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Guar Gum
What is Guar Gum?
- Constipation and bowel regularity
- Diarrhea (as a stool bulking agent)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Blood sugar control
- Feeling full for weight management
Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
About Rifampin
What Is Rifampin Used For?
Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor
Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis. It is always used as part of a combination of TB medicines, not on its own.
It also treats asymptomatic meningococcal carriers. These are people who carry the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis in the nose and throat without being sick. Rifampin is not used to treat an actual meningococcal infection.
Rifampin capsules are taken by mouth. Rifadin IV and Rifampin for Injection are given through a vein for the initial treatment and retreatment of tuberculosis when the medicine cannot be taken by mouth.

Rifampin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Rifampin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Guar Gum — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
