This combo cold medicine contains dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant), which your body clears mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Lab studies suggest higenamine can block that enzyme. If that happened in real life, dextromethorphan could build up and bring on more drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, or in rare cases agitation. The chlorpheniramine piece can add its own sleepiness and dry mouth on top of that.

Here's the honest part: this interaction has only been seen in test-tube research, not in people, so it's theoretical. Still, higenamine itself can rev up your heart and blood pressure, which is worth respecting. Before pairing them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes by 21%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with this cough and cold combo (the antihistamine chlorpheniramine plus the cough suppressant dextromethorphan). In a lab dish, higenamine slowed down CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps clear dextromethorphan. If that held true in real people, it could let levels nudge up, possibly meaning more drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or for dextromethorphan, that floaty or confused feeling.

I'll be honest though, this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube work, never confirmed in humans, and the enzyme block was modest. What worries me more is higenamine itself acting like adrenaline, raising your heart rate and blood pressure, which doesn't mix well with a cold remedy when you're sick. Please run this combo by your pharmacist before pairing them.
