Theoretically, higenamine might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that higenamine inhibits CYP2D6 enzymes. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea with Ingrezza (valbenazine) and higenamine. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear part of valbenazine. In lab (test tube) studies, higenamine appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, valbenazine could build up a bit more than expected, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, a faster or irregular heartbeat, or feeling off balance.

I want to be honest about the evidence though: this has only been seen in lab studies, not in actual people, so it's theoretical for now. On top of that, higenamine itself can stir up your heart rate and blood pressure. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the gist for Ingrezza (valbenazine): your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it out. In lab dish studies, higenamine slowed that same enzyme down a little (about 21%). If that played out in the body, valbenazine could build up a bit and its effects could feel stronger.

With more valbenazine hanging around, you might notice more drowsiness, dizziness, or, less commonly, a faster or irregular heartbeat. That last one is worth a pause, since higenamine itself can stimulate the heart and raise blood pressure. That said, this interaction has only been seen in a test tube, not in real people, so it's theoretical for now. Before mixing the two, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Valbenazine Used For?

Brand name: Ingrezza

Valbenazine — sold as Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle — is approved for two conditions in adults. The first is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes uncontrolled, repetitive facial or body movements, often brought on by long-term use of certain psychiatric medications. The second is chorea associated with Huntington's disease, which refers to the involuntary, dance-like jerking movements that are a hallmark of that condition.

Both Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle are approved for both of these uses.
