Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Clozapine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates

Why this applies to Clozapine

Clozapine falls under Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP2D6 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's crucial to highlight that, as of now, there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for clozapine. The grape seed extract in these chews has shown, in lab dishes only, a mild ability to slow down an enzyme called CYP2D6. Clozapine is partly handled by that enzyme (though CYP1A2 does most of the work). In theory, if that pathway slowed a bit, clozapine levels could drift up slightly, and that could mean more of its usual effects like drowsiness, dizziness, a faster heartbeat, drooling, or constipation.

In real life, this is very low on my worry list. There are no actual human reports of it happening, and the evidence is weak test-tube data. Clozapine is a closely monitored medicine, though, so I'd still mention these chews to your prescriber or pharmacist before starting them, just so everyone's on the same page.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

These ratings are for information only. Never start, stop, or otherwise change your therapy before speaking with your provider.

About Clozapine

What Is Clozapine Used For?

Brand names: Clozaril, Versacloz

Clozapine is used for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. That means severely ill people with schizophrenia who have not responded well enough to standard antipsychotic treatment. Because of its risks, it is meant only for those people.

It is also used to reduce the risk of repeated suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are judged to be at ongoing risk. This is supported for Clozaril tablets, Versacloz oral suspension, Clozapine orally disintegrating tablets and Clozapine tablets.
