Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with whole categories of medication. Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Humann Superbeets Heart Chews in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates

1 of 2

Why this applies to Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine

Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine falls under Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP2D6 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's crucial to highlight that, as of now, there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Here's the gist for your Actifed DM. The grape seed extract in these beet chews might mildly slow an enzyme called CYP2D6, which helps your body clear the dextromethorphan part of this combo. If that enzyme slows down, dextromethorphan could build up a little, which in theory might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or that foggy, lightheaded feeling. Dextromethorphan is the active drug here, not a prodrug, so an inhibitor pushes its effects up rather than down.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This idea comes only from lab studies, with no reported cases in real people, so it's rated minor and unlikely. Still, if you feel unusually groggy, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

2 of 2

Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine also falls under Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.

Here's the gist with your Actifed DM cold combo (which packs dextromethorphan for cough, pseudoephedrine as a decongestant, and triprolidine, an antihistamine). The grape seed extract in these beet chews can, at least in lab dish studies, slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Dextromethorphan leans partly on that pathway, so in theory its levels could nudge up a little, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy.

Honestly though, this is a very minor, mostly theoretical concern. There are no real human reports of this combo causing trouble, and the chew dose is small. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger thing to watch is that pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure, while these chews are marketed to lower it, so check in with your pharmacist if you take heart or blood pressure meds.
