Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Nimodipine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with whole categories of medication. Nimodipine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Humann Superbeets Heart Chews in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

Antihypertensive Drugs

1 of 2

Why this applies to Nimodipine

Nimodipine falls under Antihypertensive Drugs — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 500mg of beetroot powder (2 chews). Beetroot is rich in nitrates, which have the potential to widen blood vessels (vasodilation) and, in turn, possibly lower blood pressure. While there is a theoretical concern about the nitrate content in beets causing a blood pressure drop, research consistently indicates that any impact is generally minor and short-lived. However, it's crucial to be aware that blood pressure medications alone can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Combining them with beet supplements might heighten the risk of experiencing these side effects due to the temporary vasodilation caused by the nitrates in beet.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: nimodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels, and the beetroot nitrates in these chews also gently widen vessels by boosting nitric oxide. Stack the two together and you're nudging blood pressure in the same downward direction. The most likely thing you'd notice isn't dangerous, just a bit more dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling flushed or headachy, especially when you stand up quickly.

The good news is the evidence says any blood pressure dip from beets is usually small and short-lived. Since nimodipine is often used in a serious setting (after a brain bleed), I wouldn't add any new supplement on your own. Run it by your doctor or pharmacist first so they can keep an eye on your blood pressure.

Minor

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

2 of 2

Nimodipine also falls under Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 150mg of grape seed extract (2 chews). Laboratory studies suggest that grape seed extract might have inhibitory effects on the CYP3A4 metabolizing enzyme. If this enzyme is inhibited, drugs metabolized by it may undergo slower metabolism, potentially leading to (in many cases) higher-than-normal drug levels. Elevated drug levels can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. However, it's important to point out that there is no documented or reported instance of this specific interaction occurring in human studies.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Nimodipine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. The grape seed extract in SuperBeets Heart Chews (about 150mg per serving) might gently slow that enzyme, at least in lab studies. In theory, that could let a little more nimodipine linger in your body, which might nudge up its blood-pressure-lowering effects. With nimodipine, that could mean more lightheadedness, flushing, headache, or a faster heartbeat.

That said, this is a minor, unlikely concern based only on test-tube data, with no real human reports. The beet nitrates in this product can also lower blood pressure on their own. Since you're using nimodipine for a serious brain bleed, please run this product by your doctor or pharmacist first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

“Nimodipine (Nimotop, Nymalize) is given after bleeding around the brain to stop blood vessels from clamping down, and the supplement interactions on file earn real caution, not a shrug. Of the 227 ingredients listed, most either interfere with CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears nimodipine, or lower blood pressure on their own and sta…”

About Nimodipine

What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Brand names: Nimotop, Nymalize

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
