Humann Superbeets Heart Chews and Triamterene

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Antihypertensive Drugs

Why this applies to Triamterene

Triamterene falls under Antihypertensive Drugs — the group Humann Superbeets Heart Chews interacts with.

Each serving of HumanN SuperBeets includes 500mg of beetroot powder (2 chews). Beetroot is rich in nitrates, which have the potential to widen blood vessels (vasodilation) and, in turn, possibly lower blood pressure. While there is a theoretical concern about the nitrate content in beets causing a blood pressure drop, research consistently indicates that any impact is generally minor and short-lived. However, it's crucial to be aware that blood pressure medications alone can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Combining them with beet supplements might heighten the risk of experiencing these side effects due to the temporary vasodilation caused by the nitrates in beet.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: triamterene is a potassium-sparing water pill that helps your body shed extra fluid and gently lowers blood pressure. The beetroot in these chews supplies nitrates that can briefly relax and widen your blood vessels, which may nudge your blood pressure down a little too. Put the two together and the main thing to watch for is feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or wobbly when you stand up, especially in the first hours after a dose.

The good news is this is rated a minor interaction. The blood pressure dip from beets tends to be small and short-lived. Still, if you notice extra dizziness or feel faint, let your pharmacist or doctor know before changing anything. It's a quick conversation worth having.

About Triamterene

What Is Triamterene Used For?

Brand name: Dyrenium

Triamterene treats edema (fluid buildup and swelling) linked to several conditions. These include heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and nephrotic syndrome (a kidney condition). It also treats steroid-induced edema, idiopathic edema (swelling with no clear cause), and edema from secondary hyperaldosteronism (high levels of the hormone aldosterone caused by another condition).

It can be used alone or with other diuretics, for extra water-removing effect or to help the body hold on to potassium. It can also help when other diuretics, such as thiazides, have not worked well enough because of secondary hyperaldosteronism. Dyrenium and triamterene capsules carry the same uses.
