Jamaican Dogwood and Fluvastatin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Fluvastatin and Jamaican Dogwood in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Fluvastatin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Fluvastatin is filed under 8 classifications — including hmg-coa reductase inhibitors ("statins"), cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates, organic anion-transporting polypeptide substrates (oatp). Jamaican Dogwood has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being cns depressants (moderate) — and none of Fluvastatin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Fluvastatin. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 7,504 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Fluvastatin that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Jamaican Dogwood’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Jamaican Dogwood side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Jamaican Dogwood has no side effects.

About Jamaican Dogwood

What is Jamaican Dogwood?

  • Insomnia and sleep trouble
  • Nerve pain
  • Anxiety and tension
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Muscle pain and spasms
  • Migraine and headaches

Jamaican dogwood is a tree bark traditionally used to promote sleep and ease pain, but high-quality human studies are lacking. It can be toxic in larger amounts and should be used cautiously, if at all, and never during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it.

Piscidia piscipula · Fabaceae · Bark of the root and stem · Dried bark, tinctures, liquid extracts, capsules, teas

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Jamaican Dogwood is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Jamaican Dogwood record says about it on its own.

Jamaican Dogwood: dosing

There is no well-established, standardized dose for Jamaican dogwood. Products vary widely in strength, and the bark's natural compounds can be potent, so there is no safe "recommended" amount we can confidently give.If you choose to use a product, follow the directions on the label exactly and do not exceed them. It is best to start any new supplement only after checking with a pharmacist or doctor, who can help you weigh the risks. Avoid using it long-term or in high amounts.

They are also approved for boys and post-menarchal girls ages 10 to 16 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (an inherited form of high cholesterol). Fluvastatin extended-release tablets, including Lescol XL, are approved for adults with primary hyperlipidemia. They are also approved for adults and children 10 and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who need an 80 mg daily dose. Both forms are used in adults with coronary heart disease to lower the chance of needing a procedure to restore blood flow to the heart and to slow plaque buildup in the heart arteries.
