Kiwi and Argatroban

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Argatroban

Argatroban falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that kiwi inhibits platelet aggregation. Theoretically, kiwi might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with kiwi and Argatroban. Argatroban is a strong blood thinner given through an IV, usually in the hospital to prevent dangerous clots (often when someone can't use heparin). Kiwi seems to make platelets a little less sticky, so in theory eating a lot of it could nudge your bleeding risk slightly higher when stacked on top of a powerful anticoagulant like this one.

That said, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on how kiwi behaves in lab studies, not strong real-world proof. A serving or two of kiwi as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Since Argatroban is carefully dosed and watched in a hospital setting, just mention any kiwi supplements you take to your care team so they can keep an eye out for bruising or bleeding.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Argatroban page

“Argatroban is an intravenous blood thinner, usually given in the hospital when heparin cannot be used, so anyone receiving it already carries real bleeding risk. That is exactly where this list bears down.”
