Kiwi and Verapamil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Verapamil

Verapamil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that consuming kiwi reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. Theoretically, concomitant use of kiwi and antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of hypotension when used in combination with drugs that lower blood pressure. These include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: kiwi has been shown in some studies to nudge blood pressure down a little on its own. Since verapamil is already working hard to relax your blood vessels and slow your heart rate, adding the blood-pressure-lowering effect of kiwi could, in theory, push your numbers a bit lower than expected.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or notice your heart feels slow. To be clear though, this is a theoretical concern based on how kiwi behaves, not strong proof of a real problem. Eating kiwi as a normal food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated kiwi supplements are a bigger question mark. If you're loading up on kiwi daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Verapamil page

“This is one of the longer interaction lists we publish, and with verapamil (Calan, Verelan) it warrants genuine care, starting with the ten major-rated entries. Verapamil lowers blood pressure and slows the heart, so most of the 295 ingredients on file either push that effect further than intended or change how much of the drug reaches…”
