Kiwi and Ibuprofen, Hydrocodone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Ibuprofen, Hydrocodone

Ibuprofen, Hydrocodone falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Kiwi interacts with.

Clinical research suggests that kiwi inhibits platelet aggregation. Theoretically, kiwi might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about this combo: the ibuprofen half of Ibucodone already has a mild blood-thinning effect of its own, since it can slow how your platelets clump together to form clots. Kiwi appears to do something similar in a small way. So in theory, eating a lot of kiwi alongside this medicine could add up and make you a little more prone to bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach irritation and bleeding.

I want to be clear that this is a theoretical concern based on how kiwi behaves, not strong proof. A couple of kiwis as food is very unlikely to cause trouble for most people. If you take Ibucodone regularly, load up on kiwi supplements, or notice easy bruising or dark stools, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.
