Why this applies to Topiramate

Topiramate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Kratom interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk for adverse CNS depressant effects.
Kratom contains mitragynine, a mu-receptor agonist that may cause respiratory depression. Although results from animal research suggest that mitragynine causes less respiratory depression than the CNS depressant codeine, fatalities have been reported for patients who ingested a combination of kratom and O-desmethyltramadol, another mu-receptor agonist. Additionally, observational research suggests that adverse effects such as drowsiness and coma are more likely to occur in individuals taking kratom in combination with agents such as opioids and sedatives. Theoretically, ingesting kratom along with other CNS depressants can increase the risk of adverse effects, including drowsiness, coma, and/or severe or fatal respiratory depression.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: both kratom and topiramate can slow down your central nervous system. Topiramate often causes drowsiness, dizziness, trouble concentrating, and slowed thinking on its own. Kratom acts on your brain's opioid receptors and can add its own sedating effect on top of that. Stacked together, those calming and slowing effects can pile up.

So in plain terms, combining the two could leave you feeling more groggy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady than usual, and in heavier amounts there's concern about very slowed breathing. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, not a proven case-by-case result. Still, kratom carries real risks. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

What Is Topiramate Used For?

Brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia

  • Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures including primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (formerly known as a grand mal seizure; seizure that involves the entire body) and partial onset seizures (seizures that involve only one part of the brain). Topiramate is also used with other medications to control seizures in people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches but not to relieve the pain of migraine headaches when they occur. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
