Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: chloral hydrate is a sedative that already slows down your brain and nervous system to help you fall asleep. L-tryptophan can add its own drowsy, fatigued feeling on top of that. When you stack two things that both calm the brain, the sleepiness can pile up. That could mean feeling extra groggy, hard to wake, more dizzy or unsteady, slowed breathing, or being mentally foggy the next morning.

This is rated as a major, likely interaction, though part of it is based on theory plus studies showing tryptophan causes fatigue. I'm not telling you to stop either one. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them so they can look at your full picture and keep you safe.
