Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: the codeine part of your cough syrup is an opioid, and opioids already tend to make people feel sleepy, foggy, and relaxed. L-tryptophan can add its own drowsiness on top of that. Research shows tryptophan often causes fatigue and sleepiness, so pairing the two may leave you more tired than you expect, with slower thinking, more dizziness, and in higher amounts, slower breathing from the codeine.

This isn't about one blocking the other in your liver. It's simply two things that both calm the nervous system stacking up. Please don't start, stop, or change either one on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially before driving or mixing in alcohol.
