Here's the thing about pairing L-tryptophan with ondansetron (Zofran): tryptophan is a building block your body turns into serotonin, while ondansetron works by blocking certain serotonin receptors to calm nausea. On paper, anything that nudges serotonin activity upward could add to the load and, in rare cases, raise the chance of a problem called serotonin syndrome. Watch for signs like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or feeling confused.

I want to be honest, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how the two work, not on strong real-world reports. For most people taking short courses of ondansetron, the risk is low. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you take other serotonin-affecting medicines.

What Is Ondansetron Used For?

Brand name: Zofran

Ondansetron is used to prevent nausea and vomiting in several situations. Oral forms (tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, and oral solution) are approved to prevent nausea and vomiting from highly or moderately emetogenic (nausea-causing) cancer chemotherapy, from radiation therapy to the abdomen or whole body, and from surgery.

Ondansetron injection (given intravenously or intramuscularly in a clinical setting) is approved to prevent nausea and vomiting from emetogenic cancer chemotherapy — including high-dose cisplatin — in adults and children as young as 6 months old, as well as to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting.
