Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know: this isn't your antibiotic being affected, it's the probiotic. Dalbavancin (Dalvance) is a strong antibiotic that kills bacteria, and Latilactobacillus sakei is itself a live bacterium. So if you take the supplement while the antibiotic is active in your body, the dalbavancin may simply wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms, making the supplement less likely to do its job.

One wrinkle with dalbavancin: it's a long-acting drug given as an injection that lingers for weeks, so spacing them apart by a couple hours won't help much here. This is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not a safety danger to you. Your dalbavancin keeps working fine. Just check with your pharmacist about timing.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dalbavancin Hydrochloride page

“Everything on the dalbavancin (Dalvance) interaction list points in one direction. No supplement on file makes this IV skin-infection antibiotic dangerous or weaker; instead, dalbavancin can kill the live organisms in probiotic products, so the supplement is the one that loses.”
