Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Cefuroxime
Cefuroxime falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Limosilactobacillus Fermentum interacts with.
Limosilactobacillus fermentum preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. fermentum preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind: Cefuroxime is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that your probiotic, Limosilactobacillus fermentum, is made up of live, friendly bacteria. If you swallow them at the same time, the cefuroxime can wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they ever get to work. So this interaction works against the probiotic, not your antibiotic. Your cefuroxime will still treat your infection just fine.
This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work together, not hard proof, but the fix is easy and harmless: just space them apart by at least two hours. Probiotics can actually be helpful while you're on antibiotics, since they may ease the loose stools or upset stomach that cefuroxime sometimes causes. If you're unsure about timing, your pharmacist can help you sort it out.
