Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

The piece of this combo to keep an eye on is the hydrocodone, which is an opioid that slows down the central nervous system. Some of the aromatic oils in mace appear to have mild sedative effects of their own, so in theory, larger medicinal amounts of mace could add to the drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, or foggy thinking that hydrocodone can already cause.

That said, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on animal lab work, not on people, and the results are even a little mixed. Sprinkling mace on your food as a spice is very unlikely to matter here. Concentrated mace supplements are the real question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them with this medication.

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Animal research suggests that intraperitoneal injections of myristicin, a constituent of mace, can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme system. Theoretically, concomitant use of mace with drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 may increase the clearance of these drugs and reduce their effects. Some substrates of CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here is something interesting about your combo pill (Damason-P). The piece that actually interacts with mace is the caffeine. Caffeine is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and lab work in animals hints that myristicin (a compound in mace) might speed that enzyme up. If that happened in people, your body could clear caffeine a bit faster, so you might notice less of its perk, like feeling a touch more tired or getting less of the headache relief caffeine adds.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and based only on animal data, not real-world cases. Mace used as a kitchen spice is very unlikely to matter. The hydrocodone and aspirin parts are not affected here. If you are considering concentrated mace supplements, just check with your pharmacist first.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.
