Why this applies to Belladonna Alkaloids, Phenobarbital

Belladonna Alkaloids, Phenobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

Here's the gist: products like Donnatal already contain phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the nervous system, along with belladonna alkaloids. Some of the aromatic oils in mace also appear to have a mild sedating effect of their own, at least in animal studies. The worry is that stacking the two could add up, leaving you more drowsy, dizzy, foggy-headed, or slow to react than you'd expect from your medication alone.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal work, and one study even hinted mace might shorten phenobarbital's effect, so the picture isn't clean. The pinch of mace in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated mace supplements are a different story, so check with your pharmacist before using one.

Here's the short version for your Donnatal (which combines belladonna alkaloids with phenobarbital). The piece we're watching is the phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the nervous system. In animal studies, myristicin (a compound in mace) appeared to shorten how long phenobarbital kept rats asleep. The theory is that mace may nudge the body to clear phenobarbital faster, which could make it work less well for you.

I'll be honest, this is theoretical and based only on rat data, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a pinch of mace in your cooking. Concentrated mace supplements are a different story. If you take phenobarbital for seizures, even small changes matter, so check with your pharmacist before using any mace supplement.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.
