Why this applies to Dicyclomine, Phenobarbital

Dicyclomine, Phenobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

Your combination product pairs dicyclomine (which relaxes gut cramping) with phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the nervous system. The concern here is mostly with the phenobarbital piece. Some of the aromatic oils in mace appear to have their own sedating, calming effects, so layering concentrated mace on top of a sedative like phenobarbital could, in theory, add up. That might leave you feeling extra drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady.

I'll be honest: this is based on lab and animal studies, not real patients, and some animal research even hints mace could do the opposite. So it's a soft, theoretical caution. Sprinkling mace on food is unlikely to matter. Before using a concentrated mace supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Evidence from animal research suggests that myristicin, a constituent of mace, can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Theoretically, concomitant use may decrease the therapeutic effects of phenobarbital.

Your Bentyl with Pb combo includes phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the nervous system and is used for seizures and sometimes to ease stomach cramping alongside the dicyclomine. Here's the concern with mace: in animal studies, a compound in mace called myristicin appeared to shorten how long phenobarbital kept rats asleep. The thinking is that mace might nudge your body to clear phenobarbital a little faster, which could weaken its effect.

Honestly, this is theoretical and based only on rat research, not people. Normal cooking amounts of mace are very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated mace supplements are a different story, especially since phenobarbital has a narrow safe range. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any mace supplement.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.
