Why this applies to Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline

Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

This Tedral combination pill contains phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the nervous system. The concern here is with that part of the medicine. Some of the aromatic oils in mace appear to have their own mild sedating effects in lab and animal studies, so in theory, taking concentrated mace alongside phenobarbital could add up and leave you feeling extra drowsy, foggy, or slow to react.

Keep in mind this is theoretical, based mostly on animal research, and the findings are actually mixed (one study even showed mace shortening phenobarbital's effect). Sprinkling mace on your food is very unlikely to matter. It's really just the big, concentrated supplement doses to be cautious with. If you want to use those, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Evidence from animal research suggests that myristicin, a constituent of mace, can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Theoretically, concomitant use may decrease the therapeutic effects of phenobarbital.

This combination product (Tedral) contains phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the nervous system, along with ephedrine and theophylline for breathing. The concern here is with the phenobarbital piece. In animal studies, myristicin (a compound in mace) appeared to shorten how long phenobarbital kept rats asleep. The thinking is that mace might speed up how the body handles phenobarbital, so the drug could work a little less than expected.

Honestly, this is theory based on rat data, not proven in people, so I would not lose sleep over a sprinkle of mace in your cooking. Concentrated mace supplements are a different story. Before adding any, check with your pharmacist or doctor so your phenobarbital stays steady and effective.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.
