Fingolimod falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that mace lignans can suppress immune function. Theoretically, concomitant use might enhance the effects of immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the gist: fingolimod (Gilenya) already calms down your immune system on purpose, which is how it protects your nerves in MS. The concern with mace is that some compounds in it have shown immune-dampening effects in animal studies. So in theory, piling mace on top of fingolimod could push your immune system down a little further than intended, which might raise your chance of infections or make you slower to fight one off.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal work, not real cases in people. Using mace as a normal cooking spice is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated mace supplements are a different story, so please run those by your pharmacist or neurologist before starting them, and don't change your fingolimod on your own.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.

What Is Fingolimod Used For?

Brand names: Gilenya, Tascenso ODT

Fingolimod — available as capsules (Fingolimod, Fingolimod Hydrochloride, and Gilenya) and as an orally disintegrating tablet (Tascenso ODT) — is approved for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in patients 10 years of age and older. This includes clinically isolated syndrome (a first MS episode), relapsing-remitting MS (the most common type with flare-ups and periods of stability), and active secondary progressive MS (a later stage where disability gradually worsens but relapses still occur).

All supported formulations share these same approved uses. The goal of treatment is to reduce the frequency of relapses and slow disease activity.
