tipranavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that intraperitoneal injections of myristicin, a constituent of mace, can induce cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme system. Theoretically, concomitant use of mace with drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 may increase the clearance of these drugs and reduce their effects. Some substrates of CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the gist for your HIV medication. Mace contains a compound called myristicin that, in animal studies, may speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. If tipranavir (Aptivus) is partly cleared by that same enzyme, the theory is your body could clear it a little faster, which might lower its levels and weaken how well it suppresses the virus.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab and animal data, not real human studies. And with HIV therapy, keeping drug levels steady really matters, so even small changes are worth respecting. Normal cooking amounts of mace are very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated mace supplements are a different story. Please check with your pharmacist or HIV doctor before adding any, and don't change your tipranavir on your own.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.

What Is Tipranavir Used For?

Brand name: Aptivus

Aptivus (tipranavir) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in pediatric patients weighing at least 36 kg (about 79 lbs). It is specifically for people who have already tried other HIV treatments and whose virus has become resistant to more than one protease inhibitor. It is always taken together with a low dose of ritonavir and with other HIV medications.

Aptivus is not recommended for people who have never taken HIV treatment before (treatment-naïve patients). Using tipranavir alongside additional active HIV drugs improves the chances of it working well.
