Why this applies to Belladona Extract, Phenobarbital

Belladona Extract, Phenobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

Chardonna-2 pairs a small dose of phenobarbital (a sedating barbiturate) with belladonna extract. Here is the thing about mace: some of its natural oils, like myristicin and methyleugenol, seem to have their own calming, sleep-promoting effects. So the worry is simple addition. Stack mace's mild sedation on top of phenobarbital's sedation and you could feel extra drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based mostly on animal studies, and one of those studies actually showed mace shortening sleep, so the picture is murky. The amount of mace you sprinkle on food won't do anything here. Concentrated mace supplements are the real question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking them.

Evidence from animal research suggests that myristicin, a constituent of mace, can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Theoretically, concomitant use may decrease the therapeutic effects of phenobarbital.

Here's the gist with Chardonna-2, which pairs belladonna with the barbiturate phenobarbital. The concern centers on the phenobarbital piece. In animal studies, a compound in mace called myristicin appeared to shorten how long phenobarbital kept rats asleep. The thinking is that mace might nudge your body to clear phenobarbital a bit faster, which could make it work less well.

If that happened in a person, you might notice the medicine feeling weaker than usual. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and based only on animal research, not solid human data. A sprinkle of mace in cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated mace supplements are the bigger question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.
