Manna and Cryptenamine, Methyclothiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Cryptenamine, Methyclothiazide

Cryptenamine, Methyclothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Manna interacts with.

Theoretically, manna might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with diuretic drugs.
Manna contains mannitol, which acts as an osmotic laxative. Overuse of manna might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss, increasing the risk of hypokalemia.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your Diutensen contains methyclothiazide, a water pill that already nudges your body to flush out potassium along with extra fluid. Manna works as a gentle laxative because its mannitol pulls water into your gut. Here is the concern: if you lean on manna too much and end up with loose stools, you can lose potassium through the bowel too. Stacked on top of what the diuretic is doing, that could push your potassium lower than you want.

Low potassium (hypokalemia) can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how both products work, not strong study data, and occasional, normal use of manna is unlikely to be a problem. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you use manna regularly.

Manna is the dried, sweet sap of the flowering ash tree (Fraxinus ornus) and is best known as a gentle, mild laxative because it contains a sugar alcohol called mannitol.
