ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Insulin Degludec, Liraglutide
Insulin Degludec, Liraglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Octacosanol interacts with.
Octacosanol is the main component of policosanol. In humans, policosanol can decrease blood glucose. It is not clear if these effects occur with the use of octacosanol.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Xultophy is a combination of a long-acting insulin (degludec) and a GLP-1 medicine (liraglutide), and its whole job is to lower your blood sugar. Octacosanol is the main piece of policosanol, and there's some human evidence that policosanol can nudge blood sugar down on its own. So the concern here is simple: if you stack the two, their sugar-lowering effects may add up.
In real life that means you could see low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) more easily, with signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or feeling confused. Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical for octacosanol itself, and the evidence is on the weaker side. Still, since your medicine already pushes sugar down powerfully, check your levels closely and talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding octacosanol.
