Theoretically, phellodendron might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, a clinical study suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. Theoretically, phellodendron might also reduce blood pressure.

Here's the simple version. Your CoAprovel combines two blood pressure lowering medicines: irbesartan, which relaxes blood vessels, and hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill. Phellodendron contains berberine, which in animal studies and one small human study (paired with amlodipine) seemed to gently lower blood pressure on its own.

So the concern is simple addition. If both push your pressure down at the same time, you could end up too low, which can leave you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or wobbly when you stand up quickly. This is theoretical, based on how berberine behaves, not on strong human proof with this exact combo. Still, since you're already on two blood pressure agents, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it. Please don't change anything on your own.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Preliminary clinical research shows that berberine can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2C9.

Here's the gist for your CoAprovel (which combines irbesartan, a blood pressure pill, with hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill). The irbesartan part is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Phellodendron contains berberine, and early research hints that berberine can slow this enzyme down. So in theory, irbesartan could build up a bit more in your system.

If that happened, you might notice stronger blood-pressure-lowering effects, like dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when you stand up. I want to stress this is theoretical, based on how the herb behaves in the lab, not proven in people taking this combo. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding phellodendron.
