Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about combining Poria mushroom with brexanolone (Zulresso). Brexanolone is already a strong sedating medicine. In fact, it's given as a slow IV infusion in a hospital or clinic precisely because it can make you very drowsy, dizzy, or even cause you to lose consciousness. Poria mushroom, based only on animal studies, appears to have its own mild calming, sedative-like properties.

So in theory, layering the two could deepen that sleepiness and dizziness. I want to be honest though: this has only been seen in lab animals, not in people, so it's a possibility rather than a proven problem. Since brexanolone is already given under close medical supervision, just tell your care team about any supplement you take so they can keep you safe.

About Poria Mushroom

What is Poria Mushroom?

  • Fluid retention and swelling
  • Digestive complaints
  • Sleep and calming support
  • General wellness and immune support
  • Urinary support

Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid. Modern scientific evidence in humans is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
