ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Methantheline Bromide
Methantheline Bromide falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Poria Mushroom interacts with.
In animal research, poria mushroom essential oil reduces acetylcholinesterase activity. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Banthine (methantheline). This medicine works by blocking acetylcholine, which calms muscle spasms and cuts down stomach acid and cramping. Poria mushroom, at least in animal studies, seems to lower an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which leaves more acetylcholine hanging around. Since Banthine is trying to do the opposite, the worry is that Poria could nudge against it and make the medication work a little less well, meaning your cramps or symptoms might not be controlled as nicely.
I want to be straight with you though: this is purely theoretical and hasn't been seen in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, mention the Poria to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how well your Banthine is doing its job.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methantheline Bromide page
“Methantheline bromide (Banthine) is an anticholinergic, prescribed to calm cramping in an overactive gut or bladder, and this list deserves real caution before you add supplements. Three of the 46 entries rate major, and one of them, activated charcoal, shows up in everyday remedies for gas and stomach upset.”

- Digestive complaints
- Sleep and calming support

Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid. Modern scientific evidence in humans is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
