Probiotics and Griseofulvin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIFUNGALS

Why this applies to Griseofulvin

Griseofulvin falls under ANTIFUNGALS — the group Probiotics interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antifungals with certain probiotics might decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.
Some probiotics such as Saccharomyces boulardii are fungi. Therefore, simultaneously taking antifungals might kill a significant number of these organisms.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about this pairing: it actually runs in the opposite direction from most interactions. Griseofulvin is an antifungal, and one popular probiotic, Saccharomyces boulardii, is itself a friendly yeast (a fungus). So the worry isn't that the probiotic changes your griseofulvin levels or makes its side effects (like headache, upset stomach, or sun sensitivity) worse. It's that the antifungal could kill off some of that yeast-based probiotic, making the probiotic less helpful.

Keep in mind this is only a theoretical concern based on how these products work, not proven harm. If you're taking a yeast-based probiotic for a real reason, ask your pharmacist whether to space the doses apart or pick a bacteria-based product instead.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Griseofulvin page

“If you take griseofulvin for a fungal infection of the skin, scalp, or nails, give this list of 61 ingredients real attention. The single major entry is activated charcoal, which binds the drug in your gut so less of it reaches your blood and the infection gets less treatment.”

About Probiotics

What is Probiotics?

  • Digestive health and regularity
  • Antibiotic-associated diarrhea
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Vaginal and urinary health
  • Immune support
  • General gut microbiome balance

Probiotics are live 'friendly' microbes that may help certain digestive conditions, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea and some cases of IBS, though benefits depend heavily on the specific strain and dose. They are generally well tolerated for healthy people but should be used with caution by those with serious illness or weakened immune systems. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor to pick a product that matches your goal.

About Griseofulvin

What Is Griseofulvin Used For?

Brand names: Fulvicin PG, Fulvicin-U/F, Grisactin Ultra, Grisactin

Griseofulvin treats fungal skin, hair and nail infections caused by dermatophytes (fungi that live on skin, hair and nails). These are often called ringworm. It is used when the infection is not adequately treated by creams or other topical products.

It does not work for bacterial infections, yeast infections (candidiasis) or tinea versicolor. The label says it is not justified for minor infections that a topical product alone will clear. Oral suspension and tablet products (Griseofulvin, Griseofulvin Microsize and Ultramicrosize Griseofulvin) share this same list of uses.
