Why this applies to Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Probiotics interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antibiotic drugs with certain probiotics might decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.
Many probiotics are bacteria. Since these preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of sensitive organisms. Human research shows that taking probiotic concurrently with antibiotic treatment does not affect the diversity of the gut microbiome compared with antibiotic treatment in the absence of probiotics. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and these preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. Probiotics, on the other hand, are live, friendly bacteria. So if you swallow them at the same time, the amoxicillin may simply wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they get a chance to do anything. This doesn't make your amoxicillin weaker or cause more side effects. It just means you may not get the full benefit you paid for from the probiotic.

The good news is this is a timing issue, not a danger. A simple fix is to space them out by at least two hours. Many folks take probiotics to ease antibiotic-related diarrhea, which is fine, just check with your pharmacist on the best schedule.

About Amoxicillin

What Is Amoxicillin Used For?

Brand names: Amoxil Capsules, Trimox, Wymox, Amix, Amoram, Amoxident, Galenamox, Rimoxallin, Amoxil Injection

Amoxicillin treats bacterial infections in both adults and children, including ear, nose, and throat infections; lower respiratory tract infections; skin and skin structure infections; and genitourinary tract infections.

In adults only, amoxicillin is also used — always combined with other medications — to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), the bacteria behind duodenal ulcers. Getting rid of H. pylori has been shown to reduce the chance of those ulcers coming back. It is only effective against bacteria that are susceptible to it and will not work against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
