Plazomicin Sulfate falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Probiotics interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antibiotic drugs with certain probiotics might decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.
Many probiotics are bacteria. Since these preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of sensitive organisms. Human research shows that taking probiotic concurrently with antibiotic treatment does not affect the diversity of the gut microbiome compared with antibiotic treatment in the absence of probiotics. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and these preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction runs in the opposite direction from what people usually worry about. Plazomicin (Zemdri) won't be weakened by your probiotic. Instead, the antibiotic may knock out some of the live, friendly bacteria in your probiotic, since those are the very kinds of organisms it's designed to kill. So you might just get less benefit from the probiotic itself.

Good news, though: plazomicin is given as an injection in a healthcare setting for serious urinary and kidney infections, so its effectiveness against your infection isn't affected by an oral probiotic. This concern is theoretical and based on how these products work, not strong proof. If you're using both, ask your pharmacist whether timing them apart is worth it for your situation.

What Is Plazomicin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Zemdri

Zemdri (plazomicin) is approved for adults 18 and older to treat complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI), including pyelonephritis (a serious kidney infection), caused by certain susceptible bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterobacter cloacae.

Because clinical data on Zemdri are still limited, it is reserved for patients who have few or no other treatment options. It should only be used when the infection is confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it, in order to reduce the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
