Ceftazidime falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Probiotics interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antibiotic drugs with certain probiotics might decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.
Many probiotics are bacteria. Since these preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of sensitive organisms. Human research shows that taking probiotic concurrently with antibiotic treatment does not affect the diversity of the gut microbiome compared with antibiotic treatment in the absence of probiotics. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and these preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: ceftazidime is a strong antibiotic that kills bacteria, and most probiotics are live bacteria. So if you take them at the same time, the ceftazidime may simply wipe out a chunk of those friendly microbes before they can do their job. In other words, this interaction works against the probiotic, not the antibiotic. Your ceftazidime will still treat your infection just fine.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, and human studies haven't shown a big real-world problem. A simple fix is to space the doses out by at least two hours. If you're taking probiotics to ease antibiotic-related diarrhea, ask your pharmacist about timing and strain so you get the most benefit.

About Ceftazidime Injection

What Is Ceftazidime Injection Used For?

Brand names: Ceftazidime, Fortaz, Tazidime, Ceptaz, Tazicef

Ceftazidime injection is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria in several parts of the body. These include lower respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia), urinary tract infections (both simple and complicated), skin and skin-structure infections, bone and joint infections, gynecologic infections, intra-abdominal infections (including peritonitis), bacterial septicemia (bloodstream infection), and central nervous system infections including meningitis.

Tazicef (ceftazidime for injection, USP) may be used on its own for confirmed or suspected sepsis, or combined with other antibiotics such as aminoglycosides, vancomycin, or clindamycin for severe or life-threatening infections and in patients with weakened immune systems. Treatment is intended only for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to ceftazidime.
