Probiotics and Cefadroxil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Cefadroxil

Cefadroxil falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Probiotics interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antibiotic drugs with certain probiotics might decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.
Many probiotics are bacteria. Since these preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of sensitive organisms. Human research shows that taking probiotic concurrently with antibiotic treatment does not affect the diversity of the gut microbiome compared with antibiotic treatment in the absence of probiotics. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and these preparations by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Cefadroxil is an antibiotic, and probiotics are live bacteria. If you swallow them at the same time, the cefadroxil can kill off a good chunk of those friendly bugs before they get a chance to do their job. So this interaction works one direction only, it can weaken the probiotic. It does not make the cefadroxil stronger, weaker, or more likely to cause side effects like stomach upset or diarrhea.

The good news is this is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, and human studies haven't shown a big problem. An easy fix is to space them out by at least two hours. Many folks take probiotics partly to ease antibiotic-related diarrhea, so check with your pharmacist on the best timing for your situation.

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.

About Probiotics

What is Probiotics?

  • Digestive health and regularity
  • Antibiotic-associated diarrhea
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Vaginal and urinary health
  • Immune support
  • General gut microbiome balance

Probiotics are live 'friendly' microbes that may help certain digestive conditions, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea and some cases of IBS, though benefits depend heavily on the specific strain and dose. They are generally well tolerated for healthy people but should be used with caution by those with serious illness or weakened immune systems. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor to pick a product that matches your goal.

About Cefadroxil

What Is Cefadroxil Used For?

Brand names: Duricef, Ultracef, Cef-Tab

Cefadroxil treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible (antibiotic-sensitive) germs. It is approved for urinary tract infections, skin and skin structure infections, and pharyngitis or tonsillitis caused by Group A strep (Streptococcus pyogenes).

It should only be used for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it. Taking it for viruses (like a cold or flu) will not work and contributes to antibiotic resistance.
